Album Notes
Dan Israel's You're Free, his 14th studio album (and his first-ever all-new vinyl release), sidesteps midlife-crisis clichés while searching earnestly for change, liberation, and the perfect guitar break. Produced during a transitional period for Israel, who (finally!) left his legislative day job of 21 years to pursue music full time, You're Free is a cry of the heart, showcasing the songwriting chops of someone learning to cope with a plethora of challenges, all while drawing inspiration from the FM radio staples of his youth. With help from producers/engineers Rich Mattson (who also helped weave the complex guitar interplay) and David J. Russ (who also anchors Israel's sound with his rock-solid drumming), songs such as the propulsive, addictively catchy title track You're Free, the angry, impassioned Someday You'll Say, and the bluesy Soul Will Be Found would sound excellent in a basement bedroom decorated with tapestries and can collections. This powerful batch of tunes - many of which are colored by loneliness, heartache, frustration, alienation (which often accompanies our reliance on social media), rage at the current political situation, and joy at finally being released from situations that had reached a point of no return - further demonstrate Israel's longstanding knack (he was named Songwriter of the Year in the 2006 Minnesota Music Awards) for tuneful, contemplative rock music, a gift that's earned him a steadily growing and dedicated following for over a quarter-century of record-making. With his newly flexible schedule, Israel will likely be playing in your soon in your town. He hopes you're free.
