How Long

by Sara Ciantar

Some refer to it as "small town": it's not urban folk and it's not country, but maybe somewhere in between.

Album Notes
It's taken me a concerted 10 years to find this music. With that in mind I hope you enjoy it. I first went looking in classical piano traditions, then ancient and contemporary church traditions, a little bit of vocal jazz, definitely a lot of 70's folk, and then in a world music degree where I learned to play the accordion-which changed the course of my life forever. Because of my beautiful accordion, Scarlet, I found myself playing music with people whom I considered to be the best song-writers in Vancouver, and who happen to be my personal favorites the world over. Meanwhile I was traveling and living in fun countries and living in my van (no Jewel here, I spent 5 years in my lovely van, "Bets", West-Coast Canadian winters and all) until my furnace broke. But she held out long enough until I released my first CD December of 2006. This album chronicles some of these journeys (I can't believe I just used the word journeys...) and some of the amazing friends that inspired me to take these roads. Thanx for listening.

Faraway Places and Painfully Familiar Emotions
Far out west at the edges of the North American continent, where the islands meet the water meet the sky, there is something amazing happening. Walking through the streets of Vancouver late one night maybe you pass by a coffee house. From inside comes the sound of acoustic guitar. A beautiful voice. Wonderful songs.

There is so much music out there these days. Finding the real gems is like panning for gold. And much like the prospectors who passed through this part of the world a hundred years ago, those who actually found gold were few and far between.

But for those who persevere - those who keep sifting through the silt of lacking effort and mediocrity - there is some incredible amazing inspiring music to be discovered.

Sara Ciantar is one those real gems out there just waiting to be found by listeners everywhere. I stumbled across her MySpace completely by accident because she happened to play at a venue where I had once performed at myself. Moments later the page finished loading and the music began to play. It took me all of about 20 seconds to be inspired enough to head on over to CD Baby and order the entire CD.

From the first instant the melodies and music were instantly endearing. Her voice hauntingly unique and conventional all at the same time. The songs diverse, flirting with one genre after another but remaining firmly grounded in a sound that you might call distinctly "Sara". Her clever lyrics weaving intricate tales of faraway places and painfully familiar emotions. One need only close their eyes and the words and sounds will carry them away to experience exotic places and feelings. And on top of all of that, the record is also incredibly well produced and a pleasure to listen to.
