ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Microtonal" music means using intervals that are narrower than semitone, because we like precise intonation. "Improvisational" means looking for a balance between freedom of expression and proper sound organization. We use selected well-known idioms subsequently adding our own ones. Chomub.ini subtly hints at the initialization of a complex system through a simple file, based on the model of the old good clay tablet that animated Golem. And initiation - the initiation into the sound cult ministers.

"Invented tradition" means that tradition arises from our direct participation. Every cultural practice was initiated by someone; then somebody else, called conservative, continued it and protected from unnecessary changes; and then somebody, called reformer, made changes that (s)he considered appropriate. Chomub.ini evolves from the tradition of small studio recordings in Kyiv since 1980s we were the part of and gradually involves musicians of the diasporas. We strongly prefer places like Evbaz or Brooklyn to non-places, and we share our unique sonic experiences. If you find local soundscape ugly and disturbing, transform it into a nice one. When it is nice already, make it less straightforward and predictable.

“chomub.ini” is a project initiated by Viktor Pushkar in 2006 to collaborate with some of the best musicians, mostly busy and (or) distantly located but searching for new practices of musical performance. First two albums of chomub.ini were recorded with Sergey Okhrimchuck (violin) in 2006-2007 and released in 2009. The more recent collaborations within chomub.ini (since 2017) include Sergey Popovich (guitars), Julian Kytastiy (bandura), Volodymyr Voyt Jr (bandura), Martin Nyaga (cello).
