ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Chikwata 263, the mbira and rock-fusion punk band from the capital never fails to excite. Their irreverent sound has no respect for the boundaries of genre or musical demographic. They mix languages and genres to form a unique sound that’s destined to make them one of the big acts to come out of the country in this generation."
by Zimbojam

Mbira-punk: A fusion of traditional Zimbabwean sounds and modern, funky twangs and pop music beats. Chikwata.263 is a musical meal fit for a king overlooking his kraal filled with head banging cattle in a
mosh pit. Oh yes and the king is dancing. He is shaking his butt and flicking his hoof with attitude. It’s like he is the Lion King who decided to hang with the sleeping, and stay up all night. If someone was asked to describe this band they may have waxed lyrical just like that.
by Geri-Leigh Diana

From their unique approach to music to the use of mbira in punk to rock music lovers is just wonderful and they deserve this accolade. Chikwata.263 is what must be called breaking the rules in mbira and still entertaining.

Zimbabwe's first Mbira-Punk band. - Punk till I die

Chikwata.263 are a Zimbabwean band taking mbira music into uncharted punk territory. - Songlines magazine

Chikwata 263 has to be the craziest band in Zimbabwe today. They have no respect for normalcy at all, which is a good thing, because watching them perform reminds you what uniquness is and how more diverse our music scene would be if we had more bands that dared to veer so tangentially from the well-trodden path.
by Inonzi Memory/ZimboJam

Their song 'Bhutsu' which speaks of a tight shoe which has lost its heel saw the crowd going crazy with some even jumping onto the stage. From Mhondoro to Bhutsu the multiracial group has all the lyrics at their fingertips.
H-Metro

chikwata.263, a collaborative enterprise of four young musicians fusing authentic Zimbabwean traditional instruments and punk sound, has been making waves in Harare’s underground music scene.
by Masimba Biriwasha

Mixing classic spiky, punk guitar rhythms with the melodies of the mbira instrument, Chikwata 263 have carved out a name for themselves as one of the most fascinating bands to watch.
The four-man ensemble stands out as an ambitious band with a wicked sense of fun. They were voted ‘Mbira Band of the Year’ by the Mbira Society and were recently praised by Songlines magazine.
HIFA

Chikwata.263, Zimbabwe’s first and only mbira-punk band. A Book Café favourite, this band has proved itself time and time again, offering a fresh new creative sound that defies genres and always leaves you dancing
