ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
CHAR-EL was Charles Thaxton (1952-2019), Ohio-born and California-based synthesist and keyboardist/composer. Charles has performed in bands and solo concerts for over 46 years before a debilitating injury forced him into an early retirement. After touring in twenty-five states with Magic Dayze in the 70's, he played with bands doing progressive rock originals and covers, among them were STARGATE and Galileo as he continued to work with MAGIK DAYZE. He settled in Southern California—Huntington Beach—for several years and in 1979, then moved to Phoenix Arizona and worked with more prog-rock musicians. He was a member of the group GALILEO, GALILEO II and PARADOX with stellar drummer Gary Bruzzese. In 1986, Charles joined a project called VOYAGER, with Tom Moore and Eddie Katz, also working with Larry Clark again to producer a Tangerine Dream-influenced sound—extra-terrestrial soundscapes—doing original music in planetariums and at outdoor events.

Eventually moving back to his native Ohio, Charles produced his first cd under the name CHAR-EL called WORLDS WITHOUT END in 1996. The CD received repeated exposure on the NPR show MUSIC FROM THE HEARTS OF SPACE and excellent reviews worldwide. His second CD, HEAVEN AND EARTH, a 2-CD set, was released in March 2000 to critical acclaim. While the first cd was a blend of classic cosmic music atmospheres, the second disc divided the music into two worlds... HEAVEN being purely space music and meditative soundscapes, while EARTH moved into progressive rock/symphonic new age territory. For the EARTH CD, Charles enlisted some old bandmates from previous bands like Larry Clark from GALILEO on guitars, and Doug Bonnell from MAGIK on drums.

Charles' early influences include the MOODY BLUES’ Mike Pinder, ISAO TOMITA, SYNERGY (Larry Fast), YES, GENESIS, and most other progressive pioneers. The influence of new-age artists like David Arkenstone and Kitaro are incorporated as well. Some of the music from WORLDS WITHOUT END was selected by a doctor in Los Angeles to be used as part of a women\'s healing retreat program. The last few years, Charles has been doing some selected live performances in churches and at outdoor events around Ohio and Michigan and at bookstores like Borders, as well as The UFO Festival in Roswell New Mexico.

In the mid to late 2010s, Charles had appeared on several CDs by award-winning Native American flute artist DOUGLAS BLUE FEATHER, and was Douglas‘ keyboardist for ten years. Douglas’ CDs are also available at CDBaby (as well as multiple streaming platforms), including the latest release SACRED SPACE and ASCENSION, to which the album is dedicated to Charles.

Symphonic Rock Mixed With Cosmic Wonders
This follow-up to Char-El\'s critically acclaimed debut album Worlds Without End is divided in 2 sections: a space-trip and an overall symphonic tour-de-force. Heaven offers more capturing space music in the tradition of Charles\' former album, moving further on into unknown regions of our galaxy. But then there\'s Earth: which is something different. Here we encounter more rhythmic, symphonic music put together by Charles and 3 of his fellow friends he knew from projects he had done in the past. Earth is 72 minutes of thrilling sympho-rock music, a very strong effort which will please a lot of listeners, not only those familiar with Gandalf\'s early recordings, but also those familiar with Jim Pietkivitch\'s 2nd album Spiral Journey. A really exceptional track is \"Full Circle\", which really swept me away with its emotional guitar-lingerings put into a soothing tapestry of synths. An absolute must-buy!
