Album Notes
REMAST is a compilation of Rising Appalachia songs that were deconstructed and reassembled by yours truly, David Brown (a.k.a. CASTANEA). To remast is to build a new mast on a boat, to give it new sails and glory. To remast is also to restore nut producing trees such as the American Chestnut (castanea dentata) to clear-cut and mined forest lands. Trees such as these are crucial to a sustainable, place-based culture. Though nearly extinct, efforts to replant castanea d. are underway. This album, a remasting and remastering of sorts, is dedicated to those who are spreading the seeds of a regenerative future.

All songs are by Rising Appalachia except Tulli Tulli and Zavedi Me Lalino, which are traditional folk songs from Namibia and Bulgaria. Remixed, arranged and produced by David Brown (CASTANEA). Mastered by Anthony Thogmartin. Album artwork by Drew De Porter, photography by Chad Hess, Hemmie Lindholm and Syd Woodward. 2018.

Thanks to my friends, family, and all those who have encouraged and inspired this album to happen. Most especially Leah, Chloe and Biko, the extended Rising Appalachia family, Hang Massive, the Come to Life collective, Julian, Daryl, Anthony, Ben Hovey, and so many others.

Leah Smith – vocals, banjo, tambourine
Chloe Smith – vocals, banjo, fiddle
Biko Casini – djembe, bara, dun dun, shakersa
Arouna Diarra – balaphone
Danny Cudd and Markus Johansson – hang
David Brown – upright bass, guitar, kalimba, turntables, the rest.
