Album Notes
Before relocating to Virginia, Kevin Caffrey carved out a nice little niche out for himself as one of Long Island's most unique singer/songwriters. Fusing elements such as rock, folk, and synth-pop to create a catchy brand of emotional, heartfelt music. Eclectic in nature, Caffrey jumps from one different musical genre to the next without ever losing his unique perspective on songwriting. Inspired by artists as diverse as Yes, Faith No More, Peter Gabriel, and Crowded House, he has been recording albums on his own since the age of fourteen.

Written and recorded in his early twenties, "Packaged To Play" was released in the fall of 2000, the title of the album a humorous nod to the struggle that independent artists face when trying to get their music heard. If something's not 'packaged to play', most people disregard the product regardless of how strong the material may be. Following its release, Caffrey appeared on college radio stations around Long Island such as WHPC 90.3 and WUSB 90.1 to promote the album and played various venues across Long Island and in New York City stressing the importance of supporting original music by performing almost 100% original material. His efforts resulted in several high profile shows including an opening spot for Freak Parade (featuring Moogy Klingman of Todd Rundgren's Utopia) in July 2001. Packaged To Play also caught the attention of mainstream press with Kevin Amorim of New York Newsday describing Caffrey as "the great white rasp of the South Shore" (a reference to his then residence on Long Island) and grading Packaged To Play B+ for performance, B for songwriting, and B for sound quality.

In 2006, Kevin followed up the album with Noah's Dog. Outside of some local college radio airplay, it did not receive much attention but his more recent albums such as Medium Talent (2013) and Downshifter (2017) have shown his evolution as a songwriter from when he was first starting out. While clearly there are some spots on Packaged to Play that show how 'green' Caffrey was to the recording process, it's an interesting look at the early days of his music. In 2019 he remarked, "Most of these songs were written when I was around 21 and 22, and on that level, I think the material is pretty strong. I'd be happy to take nearly all of these songs and have a go at recording them again now that I have more experience form the production side of things. I'll never do that of course, but I suppose that shows that I'm still proud of the songs on this album. Start with Medium Talent and Downshifter, and if you really like those, this will be a fun album to then go and listen to." Most recently, Kevin released the experimental, ambient Other Music.

"The great white rasp of the South Shore."
Performance B+, Songwriting B, Sound Quality B; ...listen to "Eternal Forever" and "This Is Now" if you must, but the action on "Packaged to Play" heats up beginning with the five-minute-long synth- and guitar-drenched "Shackled." From there, Caffrey gets evocative. "If my life were a song/It would probably be so off-key," he sings on the beautiful and mysterious "I Know About Dreams." Then there's a British, new-wave feel to "So I Can't Help but Feel Afraid," thanks to the song's alternating driving and understated keyboards.

The instrumental "Beautiful Lush" doesn't need words for one to drink in the almost classical-style guitar.

Besides being a chameleon, Caffrey, the great white rasp of the South Shore, wrote, produced and played all of the nine songs on "Packaged to Play." And from the sound of things, he's doing all right by himself.

A Very Refreshing CD--Music filled with Sincere Emotion
This is a very refreshing cd--Music filled with sincere emotion. I enjoy listening to it because it is a change of pace from current pop/rock trends in the media, that "this-is-a-number-one-hit" made song. Kevin Caffrey is not trying to make a number one hit--he's just trying to bare his soul. This is sincere music with nice beats, addictive melodies, and lyrics we can relate to. Plus, it says on the cd that he plays all the instruments! WOW! This guy has talent! Good Luck Kevin in your career!

A solid progressive rock album you need to experience yourself!
If you are unfamiliar with Kevin Caffrey's work, you're missing out on some incredible music! "Packaged to Play" is definitely on my list of favorite albums.

The first thing that struck me about this album is the use of layers and textures. Not only is the music itself wonderful, but the lyrics are amazing too. "Eternal Forever" - definitely the best choice for an opening song! I was hooked immediately! "This is Now" is a great upbeat song, guaranteed to get you moving. "Shackled" - driving rhythm, dark lyrics, very cool vocal effect. It gives me chills. "I Know About Dreams" is a nice quiet ballad with beautiful lyrics - probably one of my favorites. "So I Can't Help But Feel Afraid" - incredibly powerful, driving, and emotional song. "Within These Elements" - lyrics, lyrics, lyrics! I am speechless. "Anyone Can" - my favorite part of this song is how the end leaves you wanting more. "Beautiful Lush," of course, is a gorgeous instrumental, and a great lead-in to "Your Special Day". "Your Special Day" is my favorite. It's a nice brooding ballad with a little bitter sarcasm thrown in.
Overall, "Packaged To Play" is just a solid progressive rock album you need to experience yourself! Check it out.

This CD is excellent.
Packaged To Play is excellent. A friend lent me her copy a few days ago when I took a trip to Maine. I listened to it most of the way down. Great, great stuff. Being somewhat of a musician, this is the kind of stuff I WISH I could write!

The Underground Pro-Rock Sound of the Next Generation is Here
The style and texture of Packaged to Play by Kevin Caffrey is clearly familiar with regards to music legends Tom Waits, Sting and the power group Rush. Their music is to his what his music will be to the next progressive rock generation. On Long Island, Kevin's score continuously rings familiar with the underground rock youths of today, strenghthened with his appearances at the local rock meccas. Kevin's passion is felt and is experienced with every bluesy riff and is only amplified by the respect he has for his instrument's power. His experiences played through his music is the kind of style that will be mentioned later as a highly influential piece in more mainstream artists' music.

One of the best CD's I've bought in a long time!!
Kevin Caffrey is the kind of artist that I haven't heard in a very long while. His, is a mixture of Tom Petty/Bob Dylan era lyrics, and easy yet strong powerful rhythm. I would buy ten more of these CDs if I could and give them out as Christmas gifts. In all seriousness this CD is a must have for any musical collection.
