ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born Marco Devon Patterson in Memphis, TN on October 21, 1985 to Darlene and Derrick Patterson, music producer BlackGrits became submerged by musical influences at a very early age. His influences ranged from church to family to local studios (and everything in between). From the very beginning, BlackGrits was a part of a household that expressed every emotion in the form of music. His Mother and Father’s late-night living room band rehearsals were the norm. Needless to say, it came as no surprise when BlackGrits’ interests peaked and he began to yearn for a better understanding of the entire system of music. The whole process from beginning to end captured his young mind like nothing else had before.
It was at the tender age of 14 that BlackGrits began to get more hands-on experience with creating and blending music. He would regularly take two ADAT tape recorders and loop various samples and breakbeats from vinyl records. Through this process, he quickly learned that musical melodic loops could be created. Impressed by their young son’s interest and raw talent, Darlene and
Derrick arranged for him to shadow a deacon at their local church in the audio engineering department. Two years of apprenticeship sharpened the skills of BlackGrits to phenomenal levels. And his efforts were rewarded. What better gift to present to a teen on a musical mission than a drum machine?!? This simple piece of equipment blew the doors of the music world wide open for the young talent. With the assistance of his father, he began to learn how to sequence and properly arrange gospel and jazz music. The home studio became BlackGrits’ personal playground. While still attending Trezevant High School, BlackGrits frequented local studios whenever he had the time. The two main studios that helped to mold his talent were Jaxx Records and 20-Strong Records. It was here, under the tutelage of Jah, a local producer, that he learned to properly record and mixdown music. BlackGrits’ unique style was formed through a range of influences, which include: Carlos Broady, Teddy Riley, Blackmilk, Madlib, Timbaland, and RZA.
Today, at the age of 27, BlackGrits is a musical force to be reckoned with. He has evolved into an artistic force that is able to utilize multiple approaches in order to produce a single song. His tools of production choice vary greatly due to his solidly founded belief that music can be created using anything. Although BlackGrits is mainly a hardware producer, his main focus remains clear throughout any task that he chooses to take on- to blend various techniques in order to create a unique and memorable sound for any project. His impressive production speeds from start to finish and his one-of-a–kind sounds place him in a league of his own. BlackGrits’ ability to find and completely occupy a niche all his own in any project makes him a rare commodity to the music world. From hip hop to rap to country to jazz- the versatility of this producer seems to be never-ending.
