ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born in 1972 in the Mhondoro rural areas, Benita Tarupiwa was exposed to the mbira dzavadzimu from an early age, as many of her older brothers and paternal uncles were mbira players. As a very young child, Tarupiwa recalls dreaming that she was being taught to play mbira by elderly men. As soon as she awakened, she would secretly attempt to reproduce the songs she was shown in her dreams, using an mbira that her father had inherited from her paternal grandfather. In this way, she taught herself to play her
first song, ‘Nhemamusasa’. In addition to playing with several well-known groups in Zimbabwe, Benita has performed abroda in Mozambique, Holland, Switzerland, Canada, and North America. Her first solo recording, "Ndotamba Ndega," was released in 1997. She currently performs with Mhare DzeNhare, an all-female mbira band that also includes, Joyce Warikandwa, Chipo Wazara, and Jane Warikandwa.
