Living Dying Man

by Barbara McAfee

A tender and reflective anthem in honor of my friend, Jamie Showkeir, who died of ALS on his 63rd birthday in August, 2015. It was inspired by our conversations about living and dying as well as his wife Maren's beautiful chronicle of his last year.

Album Notes
I've had the privilege of being involved in a community that knows how to hold death and dying in an honest, tender, and beautiful way. Many gifts have emerged from those experiences. I founded a comfort choir called The Morning Star Singers in 2007. We are a group of volunteer singers who bring songs of comfort and healing to people in hospices, hospitals, private homes...anywhere they call us. Death has been a great teacher in my life. I was honored to bear witness to Jamie Showkeir's living with dying process in the short time he had. Those conversations seeded much more than a song; they opened many doors for learning, tears, hilarity, and irreverence. I made the song with the hope that the wisdom of those conversations would reach far and wide. I sang it at his memorial celebration in Phoenix, Arizona on October 4, 2015. Godspeed, Jamie. I love you, man.
