Album Notes
'Opera' is the debut album of jazz guitarist and composer Aubin Vanns. His compositions come from life, reflecting universal emotions surrounding love, death and belonging, weaving together influences from European jazz, folk and classical music.

Vanns’ music comes to life through the playing of Alberto Palau on piano, Will Harris on double bass and Jay Davis on drums. Together they explore these settings, these different moods and craft beautiful and sincere music.

Each composition is a song without words, coloured by evocative harmony and textural percussion. Lyrical guitar-led melodies soar above intricate piano harmonies whilst double bass and drums provide further colour as well rhythmic drive.

Captivated by the power of simplicity, Aubin is led by melody. He plays with honesty and elegant lyricism. ‘Aldeburgh’ is directly inspired by Benjamin Britten’s second ‘Sea Interlude’ and ‘Death-Devoted Heart’ is a reference to Wagner’s ‘Tristan and Isolde’ whilst drawing musical influence from scandinavian folk.
Aubin is influenced by a wide variety of music including Bill Frisell, John Abercrombie, Radiohead, Britten, Richard Strauss…
November is written to a poem by FS Flint and He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven is written to a poem by WB Yeats.

Opera was recorded in one day with the band all playing in the same room. This ‘live’ recording atmosphere has translated into an interactive and highly sympathetic recording which makes for a compelling debut.
