Petits Fours Frais

by Accordeon Melancolique

What is it about the accordion? It's engendered at least as many jokes as banjo, yet when you hear it and its brethren played well, it is a free-reeded thing of beauty. As evidence, this recording features the instrument.

Album Notes
Music is full of energy
by Maladominus
Having never heard of Accordeon Melancolique in the past, I accidentally stumbled upon their music only through the iTunes store. I'm not really sure how to describe their music, but this is one album that makes accordion music sound 'cool’ and hip. This is definitely a type of music that is "indie", and would not fit neatly in most music categories. If anyone should be skeptical about this energetic album, the track "Higland Reel" (a traditional Scott tune) will convince him/her of just how much fun this album is. A slight caution: the album is a live recording, so there will be some clapping at the end of each track.

The live CD by Accordéon Mélancolique!
Petits Fours Frais
Jean-Pierre Guiran and Cherie de Boer play the accordion.
This album contains concert registrations with guest musicians in the period 2001-2003: Nick McGuire (bass), John Ligthart (guitar), Koen de Cauter (sax & guitar), Jopie Jonkers (vocals), Antoon Aukes (percussion & tap-dance), Thea van der Meer (sax) and of course Cherie de Boer (accordion, vocals & percussion) and Jean-Pierre Guiran (accordion & vocals).
A frivolous CD with lots of variety in personnel and ambience.

A refreshing musical treat
Dirty Linen, USA
What is it about the accordion? It's engendered at least as many jokes as banjo, yet when you hear it and its brethren played well, it is a free-reeded thing of beauty. As evidence, these two recordings feature the instrument, but in very different musical contexts. The Dutch-based accordion duo Accordéon Mélancolique is anything but. Their Petit Fours Frais is a sweet live CD that explores a wide variety of musical styles. Cherie de Boer and Jean-Pierre Guiran (Orkest Polytour - the wonderful ensemble that features Gypsy jazz with musettes and wonderful French composers ) are the group, completed here by bass, guitars, and saxophones. In addition to traditional tunes, there are quite a few Guiran originals. Highlights include “Une Valse Anglaise SVP,” an original, and a hard-swinging "Passé Composé." "Terezinha" is beautiful, as is the classic "La Mer," a favorite tune. This project is a refreshing musical treat.

Sans racolage ni vulgarité jouée avec fraîcheur
Etudes Tsiganes, France
