Sonic Bodhi

Sonic Bodhi was born Rob Garrett, in Des Moines Iowa in 1958, and is a survivor of polio. Rob has been a musician since the age of 17, when he got 'bit by the music bug' after spending a couple of weeks with his cousins who lived in Rockford Illinois at the time, and they taught him his first songs on the guitar.

First and foremost, "Sonic Bodhi" has been a guitarist whose influences include an eclectic blend of anyone from John McLaughlin to Pat Metheny to Steve Hillage, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and acoustic guitarists such as William Ackerman, Alex di Grassi, and Ralph Towner among others.

Over the years, Sonic Bodhi has also picked up acoustic mandolin, bass, percussion, and keyboards, absorbing from his exposure to new age, progressive jazz, acid rock, ambient and chill-out lounge, as well as traditional classic rock and prog rock, from artists such as Yes, ELP, and Pink Floyd, as well as Brian Eno, David Arkenstone and Andreas Vollenweider.

Sonic Bodhi attempts to embrace an eclectic blend of anything from the traditional stylings to ambient and avantgarde, experimental, and electronic, as well as progressive jazz and chill-out, even some dub-step thrown in occasionally. One of his famous quotes is 'there are no rules when it comes to music- there is only mood, and visualization'. His emphasis in the last few years has been to utilize new music technologies to the fullest extent of his capability, with the use of DAWs and VSTi's as well as the iPad and music apps which are now available and it has expanded the horizons of his musical exploration in a way that couldn't be reached in the 'analog' years of 4-track cassette demos done in the 80's, and even some local studio time purchased for a couple of songs.

Sonic Bodhi embraces the age of the independant artist, and celebrates music in many of its forms, and improvisation is indemic to his creative process. Occasionally, guest artists will appear in his music, such as online colleague and collaborator John Pedersen of California, a gifted piano player and keyboardist who also has a catalog on CD Baby (although the two have never met face to face to date).
