Marc Hicks

My name is Marc Hicks. I grew up in Los Angeles, where, as a child, my father put me in percussion school, in Hollywood, under the teaching of the late Mike Pacheco. Mike played the drums behind such artists as " Lionel Hampton " and " Peggy Lee ". After graduating percussion school , I formed a band called " Gangus, band. As my band was busy recording and playing engagements, I began being exposed to other musicians in L. A. who introduced me to several well known music artists and television entertainers. I landed a gig with Janet Dubois from the " Good Times" television show. You can currently hear my drum work on her web site. I am playing the drums on her track " Me, Myself and I ". After working with her for several months, I landed another gig with the late Crusader Wilton Felder ( Aug 31 1940 to Sep 27 2015 ). . The song that went extremely well for the Crusaders was of course, " Street Life ", with singer Randy Crawford. I was the drummer for a group he was producing under A. B. C. Dunhill. Wilton Felder won the Billboard Best Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year with singer Bobby Womack. Wilton also received a Grammy Nomination for the Best R&B Instrumental Performance in 1982. The album title is " Forever Always ". The instrumental single Grammy Nomination is " Inherit The Wind ". The project that I was involved with folded, and I have maintained a very good relationship with Wilton ever since.Wiltons supervision over my music has been, without a doubt, incredible. Over the years, the consultations and meetings we have had have proven to be extremely rewarding. Wiltons' credits also include recording with the Jackson 5 and Joni Mitchell.I have also recorded various television adds, and recorded with numerous artists as well.Over the years, I have developed a drum rhythm that , when analyzed, incorporates two different meters of 4/4, played at the same time. This drum rhythm took me several years to develop. The only other drummer who plays anything like this is Dave Weckl. He played something similar to my rhythm on the Chick Corea track" Johnny's Landing". Dave is improvising the pattern, while only using some of the drum kit. I am using the entire trap set involving all of the tom toms, snare drum, bass drum, ride and crash cymbals and sock. I mix the sock in the pattern on the upbeat, like the late Tony Williams. To all the musicians and fans out there, " enjoy "! Photograph of Marc Hicks and Wilton Felder used by permission from Wilton Felder.
