George Schuller's Circle Wide

George Schuller (drummer, composer, arranger and producer) was born in 1958 in New York City. He was later raised outside of Boston in a highly musical home environment; his father is composer/conductor Gunther Schuller, his brother is bassist Ed Schuller, and his mother Marjorie Schuller (1924-1992) was a conservatory-trained pianist and vocalist. George Schuller graduated in 1982 with a BA in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory of Music and performed during the 80s and early 90s with such Boston area luminaries as Ran Blake, Jaki Byard, Lisa Thorson, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, Tiger Okoshi, Dominique Eade, Bruce Gertz and Herb Pomeroy.

In 1984 he along with several NEC classmates formed the long-standing 12-piece ensemble, Orange Then Blue, which released several highly acclaimed albums on the GM Recording label. At various times, the ensemble included Dave Douglas, Chris Speed, Tim Hagans, Matt Darriau, Bruce Barth, Cuong Vu, Andy Laster, Herb Robertson, Reid Anderson, Tom Varner and Andrew D’Angelo, among countless other stalwart improvisers. John LaPorta, George Adams, Howard Johnson, Mili Bermejo, Dan Greenspan and George Garzone were among some of the special guests that recorded and/or performed with Orange Then Blue during its thirteen-year existence.

Schuller moved to Brooklyn in 1994 and gradually immersed himself into the NY area jazz scene, forming a number of smaller ensembles (Schulldogs, Circle Wide, Ruckus) and playing with a revolving door of like-minded improvisers. Since then, Schuller has performed with Lee Konitz, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Nnenna Freelon, Marty Ehrlich, Myra Melford, Ralph Alessi, Cameron Brown, Matt Maneri, Perry Robinson, J Geils, among many others. He has recorded numerous albums as a side person with the likes of Joe Lovano, Armen Donelian, Burton Greene, Tom Beckham, Hayes Greenfield, Jason Robinson, Mike Baggetta and has recorded with and/or produced CD's for Ballin' The Jack, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Gunther Schuller, Michael Musillami, Luciana Souza, and Peter Yarrow.

As a bandleader, Schuller has released several recordings on Playscape Records – most recently Circle Wide’s Like Before, Somewhat After – as well as albums on GM Recordings, Fresh Sound, 482 Music, Cleanfeed and New World Records. Besides recording his own music, he has released album tributes to Keith Jarrett and Miles Davis, and is currently exploring the music of Jimmy Giuffre (Whirrr!) and Jaki Byard (Yard Byard).

Schuller’s own recorded projects have included performances with Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Mark Feldman, Donny McCaslin, Ingrid Jensen, Brad Shepik, Jamie Haddad, Barney McAll, Dan Tepfer, Peter Apfelbaum, Ed Schuller and other notable players. As an active performer on NY‘s jazz scene, Schuller currently leads the groups Circle Wide and George Schuller Trio in addition to co-leading several others (Conference Call, Trio This, Whirrr!). He is also active in the film world having co-produced the 2007 Film Documentary Music Inn, which was introduced at the Tribeca, Berkshire, Galway, Munich and Prague Film Festivals.
